INDIA'S FIRST GUIDED AIRFLOW CARDIAC OPERATING THEATRE

July 2004, SPMM Hospital –

The 100 bed multi specialty and cardiac care hospital SPMM Hospital, based in Salem, Tamil Nadu has become the first hospital in India to install an Ultra Clean OT of Johnson Medical's guided airflow technology that regulates the airflow to avoid air turbulence and helps maintain high sterile condition.

Mr.S.Devarajan, Chief Executive of SPMM, who was determined to create a world class OT with a very high sterile condition and a systematic airflow system, found a truly ultra clean solution in Johnson Medical's OT model.

"Our previous system was based on Laminar air flow which was directing the air in such a way that it hit the operation table directly, causing inconvenience to the surgeons" say Devarajan.

Johnson Medical's guided airflow based system comes with HEPA filter that reduces the presence of foreign particles and bacteria up to 0.3 microns. "The important technical feature of Johnson Medical is its airflow. The guided airflow allows air to flow from the side walls of the theatres, which allow us to avoid air turbulance" "As the airflow does not hit the operation table directly, surgeons feel at ease while performing long hours operations"/ The walls in OT is lined with high pressured laminated material that does not allow bacterial growth.

Dr.K.M.Cherian, a renowned cardiac surgeon, who recently performed an operation in SPMM's theatre, said the quality of the theatre facilities are even better than that of the OTs in some of the world class corporate hospitals. Dr.Cherian said the experience of performing operations at SPMM's cardiac OT was great. "The OT has all the latest equipment in addition to the ultraclean air technology, which not only makes the OT absolutely sterile but also save huge floor space for the operating team to move around", he said and added "The system also provides a conducive ambience for performing surgeries"
